  The following link displays the full text of H.R. 3200, the "America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009" as it was introduced to committee. I've read it in its entirely, and I suggest everyone who is interested should read it, including all senators and representatives in Congress. Please see below:

  Now, as this is just a first version that has not yet made it out of the committee where it was authored, many details are subject to change. In fact, the Senate Finance Committee has already agreed to drop the end-of-life provisions that have generated so much (unnecessary) controversy in recent days. I'm actually quite disappointed with the senators who agreed to remove that part, since I feel that it is a very important provision that should be included. (More about that later.) However, it is still possible that such provisions can be rewritten or reexamined and introduced to the bill again down the road.
  
  Having said all that, I think it's time to clear the air on some misinformation floating around out there in town hall meetings and the blogosphere. Here are just a few points that people need to understand clearly:
  
  FACT #1: This is NOT a call for mandatory socialized medicine.
  
  The health care bill DOES NOT advocate forcing people to accept nationalized health care coverage. This has been one of the biggest misconceptions out there, and it's not true. What it does is offer a federal plan for those that would choose it. It means that if you like your privatized provider, you can keep it. For everyone else, the families in poverty or struggling to get by, there's this option.
  
  FACT #2: There are no such things as "death panels."
  
  Sarah Palin and other people have done an amzing job of scaring the easily duped by claiming that "'Obamacare' will KILL YOUR GRANDMA." That is as blatant of a falsehood as they come. The language of the health care bill actually had a provision that would allow for people who wanted it to have counseling with doctors and other medical professionals about advance directives and other end-of-life issues. This is one part of the bill I was happy to see included since most people don't think about those things or intentionally put them off until it's too late. I had to deal with that this year myself, and it's more important than a lot of folks realize. Sadly, because of Palin's scare tactics, the Democrats and others in the Senate Finance Committee stripped that out of the current resolution language. Perhaps it'll be added back in later in some form, but buckling under pressure like that does not bode well.
  
  FACT #3: Health care reform won't replace Medicare.
  
  I don't understand why people think this. Medicare has been around for decades and has proven to be an effective form of government-managed health care. My mother, God rest her soul, would not have survived as long as she did without the assistance of doctors, hospitals and medicine on the Medicare plan. Her company's insurance (before she retired) had written her off and given up on her. Medicare didn't. They stepped in and covered her treatments. Another thing I don't get is why people who have used Medicare or are on disability are rallying against "socialized medicine." What do they think Medicare is?!
  
  FACT #4: The government's plan will NOT cost more.
  
  Not likely at all, actually. In fact, it was designed to be more affordable as its primary intention. The current bill discusses limits on premiums and caps on out-of-pocket expenses. It creates a list of high standards that any federally offered plan must meet to be a "Qualified Health Care Program." It also stipulates that private insurers must meet or exceed those same standards within five years. The aim is to provide better and cheaper coverage to everyone, whether they choose a public or private health care option.
  
  If you have other questions about what the plan does and doesn't include, the White House has made available this handy little "cheat sheet" which addressed some of the more publicized concerns about consumer protections:

  I've read this document and compared it to the actual passages in the bill, and everything they describe is accurate. If you've heard differently, you've been misinformed by people who have either misinterpreted the context of part of the resolution or have completely made things up (like "death panels").
  
  Okay, so who's against this? Well, many opponents to President Obama and the Democratic Party for one, and for various reasons. The classic excuse is just politics, plain and simple. If such a contentious proposal was introduced by a Republican senator or representative, you can bet that there would be Democrats opposed to is for purely partisan gain. It's that same way on either side, so you just have to take that for what it is.
  
  Another two groups opposed to health care reform are the pharmaceutical companies and the insurance industry. Big surprise. Who would want anyone coming in and telling them how to run their operations better, unless said people are trying to made vital services accessible and affordable to segments of the population who would otherwise not have access to them? The big businesses behind them stand to lose a lot of ground in their health care dominance, so it's natural that they would want lobbyists and think tanks to be in the pockets of the very politicians that are in positions to try and stop health care reform dead in its tracks.
  
  Then there are the crazies, the people on the fringe that have been swallowing all the outright lies being told to them by Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and others because they scare easily and are susceptible to outside influence. These are the same people you see at town hall meetings screaming until they turn blue in the face, the hangers-on from the "Red Scare" of the 1950s-60s who have done nothing more than replace their irrational fear of "communism" with "socialism." Did I also mention that a number of them are also undereducated? That would explain those silly posters of Obama made up to look like the Joker with the word "SOCIALISM" written in big, bold letters underneath. The Joker is an anarchist, and he's about as far away from being a socialist as you can get. But I digress upon discussing an example of why these folks don't need to be shut up and silenced -- they just need to be educated.
  
  And that's the best thing we can do to make sure health care reform passes: EDUCATE THE PUBLIC. Sure, some people will make every effort to ignore the facts and parade about with their fingers in their ears, but you reach the ones you can. And hopefully, if you've read all the way to the end of this post, I've reached you too.

Obama's Wonderful Amnesty Bill

  It seems our President has more compassion and empathy for Illegal Aliens than he does for American citizens. President Obama is strongly supporting an Amnesty Bill that includes the following provisions for Illegal Aliens and leaves the real American citizens paying the tab.   1. Illegal Aliens can have legal status after 24 hours without having a complete background check.
  
  2. American taxpayers will pay the lawyer fees for Illegal Aliens to become American citizens.

  4. Amnesty will be given for GANG MEMBER Illegal Aliens!
  
  5. Illegal Aliens will NOT have to pay any back taxes they owe the U.S. government.
  
  6. This bill virtually erases the borders between Mexico and the U.S.
  
  7. Border security is not a priority in this bill.
  
  8. The U.S. government will provide tuition for Illegal Aliens to attend U.S. colleges (What about tuition for us citizens?)
  
  9. Amnesty will be given to Illegal Aliens who have already been deported so they can come back to the U.S.
  
  10. English is not required to be learned by Illegal Aliens.
  
  11. Illegal Aliens will be eligible for "Earned Income Tax Credit" !
  
  12. American taxpayers will have to foot the bill to pay Mexico for healthcare for its citizens to keep them from coming to the U.S. for healthcare.
  
  13. Illegal Aliens will be able to cut infront of legal immigrants who have the appropriate papers, visa, and applications pending for citizenship.

  It's going to be a slow process but the transition to snow could be rapid in the PM hours...and certainly there is still potential here for a decent snow...the NAM for what it's worth is still pounding us with snow...6-12" as a matter of fact and the GFS certainly would show the potential of a decent+ snow as well...RUC data also shows the snow too...
  
  The key...as it's been all along is whendo we get the snow...DH just called in some sleet mixing in in Downtown KC...the maps show that we still have an elevated warm layer that needs to get eroded...latest maps are still showing a warm layer up there...however farther west into the colder air through the column...it's starting to snow more especially near Oskaloosa/Manhattan so it's a sign the atmosphere is gradually cooling...but it's still going to take a while longer...
  
  The transition should be done with over the next 4-5 hours...and when we do...one look at radar shows that the precip is out there...and when we switch it may snow hard and fast...so accums as set forth this AM are still doable. There is some upside potential to the in some areas as well...especially off to the SE of KC...so basically no real changes to what I've outlined this AM at this point...anywhere from 2-4" for the metro with a 4-6"+ area off towards the E/SE /S of KC...again the key is when do we change over...
  
  Of note as well is the ice that has collected on the exposed surfaces...while the roads are still in OK shape...some areas well to the SW of here aren't so lucky...down towards Burlingame there are reports of power outages and slide offs have been reported along I-35 near Lebo...here is the latest precip discussion based on the current trends...from the Satellite Analysis Branch

- Signed executive orders to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within a year, ban torture and end the CIA's secret overseas prisons and define treatment of Detainees. (but, they are nowhere close to actually closing Gitmo and are still holding all those folks)
- Reversed restrictions on stem cell research. (typical Lib talking point. It was only in allowing federal money to be used for embryonic stem cell research. All other stem cell research was going on, and providing cures, something ESCs have yet to offer)
- Signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Reducing discrimination based on gender, age, religion, or race. (which will create more lawsuits, so, a sop to the lawyers)
- Signed an executive order reversing the ban that prohibits funding to international family planning groups that provide abortions. Gag rule revoked (Mexico City policy). (so, using American taxpayer money to fund abortions in other countries)
- Creates the White House Council on Women and Girls "to provide a coordinated federal response to the challenges confronted by women and girls and to ensure that all Cabinet and Cabinet-level agencies consider how their policies and programs impact women and families." (It says something about a liberal controlled government, which tends to employ more liberal leaning people, that they have to protect females from their policies, eh?)
- Signed a Presidental Memorandum extending federal benefits to same-sex partners of federal workers and announced support for the Domestic Partners Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009. (Which could raise insurance rates. I should say, I personally have no problem with extending benefits, though)
- Reverses U.S. position on LGBT Issues at the UN: At the "Durban Review Conference," U.S. supports language condemning "all forms of discrimination and all other human rights violations based on sexual orientation." (The same UN conference which has voted to make criticism of Islam criminal)
- Signed executive order requiring federal contractors to offer jobs to current workers when contracts change. (no big deal)
- Reversed a Bush order requiring federal contractors to post notice that workers can limit financial support of unions serving as their exclusive bargaining representatives. (another sop to the unions Dems are beholden too)
- Signed executive order preventing federal contractors from being reimbursed for expenses meant to influence workers deciding whether to form a union and engage in collective bargaining.
- Created a foreclosure prevention fund for homeowners. (more union sops)
- Expanded eligibility for the refinancing portion of the Making Home Affordable plan to help Americans struggling with distressed mortgages refinance at lower interest rates, even if they owe up to 25 percent more than their homes are now worth. (most of those people should live in apartments)
- Established a credit card "bill of rights". (which will make it harder to get a credit card)
- Expanded loan programs for small businesses. (but, it is damned near impossible for small businesses to actually get them)
- Extended and index the 2007 Alternative Minimum Tax patch. (can't comment, know nothing about this one)
- Expanded eligibility for State Children's Health Insurance Fund (SCHIP). (because every family making up to $85k needs someone else to pay for their health insurance for kids up to 25)
- Expanded funding to train primary care providers and public health practitioners. (but, will reduce their medicare/medicaid payments, and make it so doctors become more specialized)
- Created a new White House task force on the problems of middle-class Americans, and installed Vice President Joe Biden as its chairman. (Sheriff Joe has been doing a hell of a job, eh? Has anyone even heard of this task force?)
- Appoints Vice President Joe Biden to Oversee Stimulus Plan Payouts. (How's that going?)
- Granted a reprieve to Liberian immigrants facing imminent expulsion. (This one is a good thing)
- Directed military leaders to end war in Iraq. (and holding to the exact same plan Bush had)
- Allowing Caskets to be photographed when the return from Iraq with family approval. (interesting that, now that Obama is President, the media is now ignoring soldiers who come home in caskets, eh?)
- Released nine previously secret internal Justice Department memos and opinions defining the legal limits of government power in combating terrorism. (which only told one side of the story, and he has blocked releasing the memo's that support the other side)
- On Arab TV Network, Obama Urges Dialogue. (and apologized for America)
- Gave a speech in Cairo engaging the Muslim and Arab world. (and apologized for America)
- Bars independent contractors from conducting interrogations of terror suspects. (but, didn't ban all interrogations)
- Granted Americans unrestricted rights to visit family and send money to Cuba. (Great. Sending more money out of our economy)
- Ordered the release of nearly a quarter of a million pages of records from the Reagan White House that were kept from the public during a lengthy review by President George W. Bush. (hey, where are Carter's and Clinton's papers?)
- Restored funding for the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne/JAG) program. (and guess where the funding is coming from? If you guessed Porkulus, have a cigar)
- Released presidential records. (but not his own. I'm still trying to get the records of who was on the flight that scared the bejesus out of Manhattan. Keeps getting shuffled to different divisions)
- Required new hires to sign a form affirming their hiring was not due to political affiliation or contributions. (more frigging paperwork for business)
- Pushed for enactment of Matthew Shepard Act, which expands hate crime law to include sexual orientation and other factors. (gives yet another group more rights over others)
- Invites gay families to the Easter Egg Roll as part of the Obama administration's outreach to diverse communities. (and blew off those who weren't gay)
- Created a White House Office on Urban Policy. (how to create more grasshoppers in the hood)
- Increased funding for the NEA. (because we all need more crosses in jars filled with urine and paintings made of elephant poop)
- Appointed an assistant to the president for science and technology policy. (John Holdren thinks that population should be held in check, through forced abortions and other means)
- Funded a major expansion of AmeriCorps. (creating more Obamazombies)
- Banned lobbyist gifts to executive employees. (then he went and hire a bunch of lobbyists. I should point out, I do not think that most lobbyists are the problem. The politicians are the problem)
- Investment in all types of alternative energy. (none of which are even within decades of being viable and deployable)
- Enacted tax credit for consumers for plug-in hybrid cars. (meaning more problems with the energy grid)
- Support for high-speed rail. (in the middle of the New Mexico desert, as a sop to Harry Reid)
- Provided grants to encourage energy-efficient building codes. (I hope he has encouraged Al Gore, John Edwards, and John Kerry to make their homes more energy efficient)
- Extended unemployment insurance benefits and temporarily suspend taxes on these benefits. (apparently, he knew his Porkulus plan would never really create jobs)
- Created the White House Council on Automotive Communities and Workers to help auto industry workers transition to new manufacturing opportunities, including jobs in alternative energy. (in other words, how to put the UAW in charge of GM and do away with the profitable car lines)
- Stopped raids on medical marijuana dispensers. (eh. On this, I could care less. If smoking pot makes a terminally ill person feel OK, fine. However, if ObamaCare passes, pot may be all those folks have left to ease their pain)
- Nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court of the United States. If confirmed, Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic to ever serve on the Supreme Court. (interesting how when it was Bush nominating and appointing minorities and women to first time ever positions, it was "yawn" from the left)
- Appointed more than 60 openly LGBT persons to positions in the executive branch. (but is still against gay marriage)

- Restored Endangered Species Act Provision requiring U.S. agencies consult with independent federal experts to determine if their actions might harm threatened and endangered species. (This was done with an anthropogenic global warming bent)
- Orders The Chesapeake Bay Protection and Restoration "to protect and restore the health, heritage, natural resources, and social and economic value of the Nation's largest estuarine ecosystem and the natural sustainability of its watershed." (I like this one)
- Signed the 2009 Omnibus Public Land Management Act designating two million additional acres of public wilderness areas the highest level of government protection from logging and other forms of commercial use and development. (back to that Tongass National Forest logging issue)
- Signed the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act which will expedite the search for cures and treatments for millions of Americans living with paralysis caused by spinal cord injury, stroke, MS, Parkinson's and many other diseases and disorders. The Perseids Are TONIGHT

  Don't worry though...if you miss out tonight there should be another decent show tomorrow night...this year the data points to a more active series of meteors that may grace our skies...early data seems to indicate that upwards of 200 meteors per hour may be seen in some areas...of course you need to have several factors helping you out...I'll get to that in a minute...first though the science aspect of this astronomical event...
  
  With a hat-tip of wikipedia...here is what a meteor is...
  
  A meteor is the visible streak of light that occurs when a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere. Meteors typically occur in the mesosphere, and most range in altitude from 75 km to 100 km.^[4] Millions of meteors occur in the Earth's atmosphere every day. Most meteoroids that cause meteors are about the size of a pebble. They become visible between about 40 and 75 miles (65 and 120 kilometers) above the earth. They disintegrate at altitudes of 30 to 60 miles (50 to 95 kilometers). Meteors have roughly a fifty percent chance of a daylight (or near daylight) collision with the Earth as the Earth orbits in the direction of roughly west at noon. Most meteors are, however, observed at night as low light conditions allow fainter meteors to be observed.
  
  There was some research done last week on the early stages of the Perseid Meteor Shower...and in research done the speed of the meteors was close to 130,000 MPH...and when the meteors finally burned up...they were roughly 50-70 miles up into the atmosphere...cool information to pass along to the kids watching for the next several nights...
  
  the Perseids are associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle...as the earth's orbit moves through the long tail of the comet...these very fine particles of the comet enter the uppermost portion of the earth's atmosphere...there as they descend, they quickly burn up...some are very faint...others can be more dramatic...it just takes time outside to see them better...
  
  So how can you improve your chances of seeing some of these meteors...
  
  1) Get away from the city lights...and let your eyes adjust to the darkness...
  
  2) The Full Moon a few nights ago is in the process of waning...and while in an ideal setting we'd like to have no monshine for these events...so again...give your eyes time to adjust
  
  3) Some insect repellent is a good idea as well...
  
  4) Binoculars aren't advisable...you want as broad a vision of the heavens as you can get...

  We all experience life-changing moments at odd times.   Those chance encounters that you remember for the rest of your days because what you learned was such a shock to your insulated lifestyle.
  
  One of those moments for me came several years ago when my company was asked to feed Thanksgiving dinner to a group of 100 local, homeless, school children. I agreed to the request and showed up at the appropriate time with several roast turkeys, mashed potatoes, gravy and other "holiday fare".
  
  The kids were late!   It was during my busy season so I wasn't real happy about that.  I was a little ashamed of my personal reaction when I discoved that the reason they were late was that they were having to hunt down the children. "What do you mean?", I asked. And was told that the kids "couch surf" between different homes each day, so it takes a little extra time to find them. But eventually they arrived and proceeded to eat.
  
  At the end of the meal, a six year old boy came back to the buffet and asked if he could take home some dinner to his mother. He said, "I don't want my Mom to go hungry tonight".   And my universe was upended.   The realization finally hit home that I lived in the richest country in the world....and there were still 1st graders who felt obligated to try to feed their family.   They weren't worried about things I think of kids worrying about. Things like missing TV or tomorrow's recess or their next soccer game. They were worried about feeding Mom at the ripe old age of 6! THAT'S SO WRONG!!!
  
  I've done that same event every year since. It's one that I never hand off to an employee because I never want to be so comfortable that I forget that boy's situation. (And I will remember the look in his eyes until the day I die.)
  
  Hunger is a major problem both for this country and for Missouri:
  
  "one in five Missouri children lives with hunger. That ties us with Louisiana for the nation's seventh-highest rate, according to a report released last month by the hunger-relief charity Feeding America.
  
  Or that the recession has pushed the number of poor Missouri kids who qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches by 8.3 percent this year, well above the national average."
  
  I tell you this story to introduce you to this woman:
  
  Dressed in her cute pink outfit, surrounded by her husband and children is Missouri State Legislator Cynthia Davis from St. Charles County. She is the co-owner of BACK TO BASICS CHRISTIAN BOOKSTORE in O'Fallon Missouri. "Rep. Davis has been appointed to serve as the Majority Floor Whip. She was also elected by her peers to be the Secretary for the Women Legislators of Missouri and was also elected to be the Vice-President of First Capitol Federation of Republican Women. She is also serving as the Republican Committeewoman for the Dardenne Township." She also chairs the Missouri House Special Standing Committee on Children and Families.
  
  She recently released a statement in her newsletter on a summer program sponsored by the Agricultural Department to feed school aged children during the summer.   This program last year fed 3.7 million meals at a total cost of under 9.5 million dollars. (By using local churches and food pantries, that keeps the costs to under $3/meal. Pretty efficient use of our tax dollars if you ask me.)
  
  The chair of the Committee on Children & Families wrote:
  
  "While I have not seen this as a problem in my district, it is entirely possible that the (summer feeding) program is designed to address problems that exist in other parts of Missouri," Ms. Davis says in her newsletter.
  
  "The right way to solve this is with more education. If parents ... don't know how to serve nutritious meals, let's help them learn to do that."
  
  Why have meals at home with your loved ones if you can go to the government soup kitchen and get one for free? This could have the effect of breaking apart more families.
  
  Anyone under 18 can be eligible? Can’t they get a job during the summer by the time they are 16? Hunger can be a positive motivator. What is wrong with the idea of getting a job so you can get better meals?
  
  Tip: If you work for McDonald’s, they will feed you for free during your break.
  
  Families may economize by choosing to not waste hard earned dollars on potato chips, ice cream, or Twinkies. Perhaps some families will buy more beans and chicken and less sweets.
  
  They are using a "crisis" to create an expansion of a government program. Parents naturally love their children and enjoy caring for their children just as much as ever during an economic downturn...Laid off parents could adapt by preparing more home cooked meals rather than going out to eat.
  
  Rather obviously, Rep. Davis is a little out of touch with the real world that many of her fellow Missourians face.
  
  Here's a reality check for you:
  
  This is what a food line looks like.   There are lots of them in Missouri.   This one's from Southwest Missouri! Does this look like a made-up "crisis" just to increase government?
  
  This is what one of the children who was fed last summer from the program you scoff at looks like! (He looks a little short to run a fryer safely!)
  
  Rep. Davis is a disgrace to her office and to our state! She should be ashamed of herself and her district should be ashamed of themselves if they re-elect her.
  
  If this story upsets you as much as it did me, you can do three things to help.
  
  1) Make a donation of food or money to a local food pantry.   Make sure the donation is made in honor of Rep. Davis!
  
  2) You can e-mail Rep. Davis yourself at cynthia.davis@house.mo.gov
  
  3) Contact your local state legislator to ask them to lobby Republicans to remove Rep. Davis from her chairmanship of the Committe on Children and Families.   Missouri deserves better representation than this!

  Here is what prompted the Sirens...thanks to Tara McKee for sending this into the forecast center...see my blog from late this afternoon for the siren concerns...
  
  This is really no-ones fault...but the outdoor warning system as we all know has it's faults...
  
  There was a BRIEF funnel that developed near the I-470/View High Drive intersection on the south side of KC...west of Lees Summit...didn't last for long...didn't get close to making it to the ground as near as I can tell...but was noteworthy none the less...the folks @ the KC EM decided to trigger the sirens and then ask later to figure things out...this was based on more than a handful of reports concerning this phenomena...so far so good...
  
  Now it gets tricky...in Jackson County, MO...the KC Emergency management has the ability of triggering off the sirens in 3 zones...zone #1 is for the sirens NORTH of Gregory...zones #2 are for the sirens SOUTH of Gregory...and zone #3 is for the sirens (3) near the Jackson/Cass county line...ZONE #2 WAS ACTIVATED....
  
  However since the zone is sooooo large considering where the storm was located...1000s of residents heard the sirens as far north as the Waldo/Brookside even with partly cloudy and calm conditions...this prompted 100s of phone calls...and a live cut-in assuring that the vast majority of residents who heard the sirens were not under a tornado threat...
  
  I talked to Stephen Bean from the EM of KCMO...they have just gotten some new software to help "create" more zones...this should allow folks who need to hear the sirens hear them...and for many areas...if you don't need to have the sirens triggered...they won't get triggered...there is hope that this will be in operation by NEXT Spring...if not earlier

Police: U.S. teens were hit me

  LAREDO, Texas (CNN) -- Rosalio Reta sits at a table inside a Laredo Police Department interrogation room. A detective, sitting across the table, asks him how it all started.
  
  Gabriel Cardona, who shows his tattooed eyelids, worked as a hit man for a Mexican cartel.
  
  Reta, in Spanish street slang, describes his initiation as an assassin, at the age of 13, for the Mexican Gulf Cartel, one of the country's two major drug gangs.
  
  "I thought I was Superman. I loved doing it, killing that first person," Reta says on the videotape obtained by CNN. "They tried to take the gun away, but it was like taking candy from kid."
  
  Rosalio Reta and his friend, Gabriel Cardona, were members of a three-person cell of American teenagers working as cartel hit men in the United States, according to prosecutors. The third was arrested by Mexican authorities and stabbed to death in prison there three days later.
  
  In interviews with CNN, Laredo police detectives and prosecutors told how Cardona and Reta were recruited by the cartel to be assassins after they began hitting the cantinas and clubs just across the border.
  
  CNN has also obtained detailed court records as well as several hours of police interrogation videos. The detective sitting across the table from Reta and Cardona in those sessions is Robert Garcia. He's a veteran of the Laredo Police Department and one of the few officers who has questioned the young men.
  
  "One thing you wonder all the time: What made them this way?" Garcia told CNN. "They were just kids themselves, waiting around playing PlayStation or Xbox, waiting around for the order to be given."
  
  Over a nearly one-year period starting in June 2005, the border town of Laredo, Texas, saw a string of seven murders. At first glance, the violence looked like isolated, gangland-style killings. But investigators started suspecting something more sinister.
  
  Then Noe Flores was gunned down in a clear case of mistaken identity. Investigators found a fingerprint on a cigarette box inside the suspected shooter's get-away car. That clue unraveled the chilling reality and led police to arrest Gabriel Cardona and Rosalio Reta.
  
  Prosecutors say they quickly discovered these two teenagers were homegrown assassins, hired to carry out the dirty work of the notorious Gulf Cartel.
  
  "There are sleeper cells in the U.S.," said Detective Garcia. "They're here, they're here in the United States."
  
  The cases against Cardona and Reta -- both are in prison serving long prison sentences for murder -- shed new light into the workings of the drug cartels.
  
  Prosecutor and investigators say Reta and Cardona were recruited into a group called "Los Zetas," a group made up of former members of the Mexican special military forces. They're considered ruthless in how they carry out attacks. "Los Zetas" liked what they saw in Cardona and Reta.
  
  Both teenagers received six-month military-style training on a Mexican ranch. Investigators say Cardona and Reta were paid $500 a week each as a retainer, to sit and wait for the call to kill. Then they were paid up to $50,000 and 2 kilos of cocaine for carrying out a hit.
  
  The teenagers lived in several safe houses around Laredo and drove around town in a $70,000 Mercedes-Benz.
  
  As the teens became more immersed in the cartel lifestyle, their appearance changed. Cardona had eyeballs tattooed on his eyelids. Reta's face became covered in tattoo markings. (Prosecutors say during his trial Reta used make-up to cover the facial markings.) And both sported tattoos of "Santa Muerte," the Grim Reaper-like pseudo-saint worshipped by drug traffickers.

In college, he had a job tagging and tracking rattlesnakes in northeast Kansas. So imagine his surprise when on a regular hike on his off day, not even looking for snakes, a Southern Pacific rattlesnake leaped out of the grass and bit him in the calf.   You can presume the overwhelming feelings that have gone through my mind over the last couple of days. It made me sick reading all the details, from the symptoms to the helicopter ride. Rattlesnake venom is on the low end of the snake toxicity scale (low compared to, say, a Fer-de-Lance, or a Taipan). Yet Mike was losing control of motor function while driving for help. It doesn't appear he had a cell phone signal to call for help.
  
  Despite his outdoors experience, Mike made a few mistakes. He left the trail, walking in tall grass where he could not thoroughly inspect the ground. Even though it was 94 degrees outside, he left the trail wearing shorts. Long pants would've lessened the snake's puncture of the skin. And he was out alone, probably without telling someone where he was hiking. Always inform someone of your hiking plans, and when you intend to return.
