Good Afternoon Everyone!
The sun has returned and it is pretty comfortable outside with temperatures in the Kansas City metro mainly in the lower 50s. Highs today should top out in the mid 50s in most spots, with the sunny skies sticking around for the rest of the day. Tonight with clear skies, light winds and leftover moisture from earlier this week we should see fog (dense at times) developing over a good portion of the viewing area. This morning we had dense fog advisories and I wouldn't be surprised if we have a similar advisory for tomorrow morning.
Several little pieces of energy will be moving around us through the weekend, and the big question is whether or not we'll see any residual effects from them. Right now I think we'll see extra clouds for Friday and Sunday...and a very slim chance for some sprinkles and/or light rain Friday night or Saturday morning. The weekend should still be at or above average temperature wise, with highs in the 50s.
Then our attention turns to next week and our potential for rain, snow and colder weather. Models are all over the place for rain and snow chances Monday through Wednesday. The Canadian model has rain possibly switching to snow starting late Monday night into Tuesday. The GFS has nothing precip wise for next Monday and Tuesday and extra clouds with a storm passing to our north on Wednesday. The ECMWF has a chilly rain possibly switching to snow also starting Monday night into Tuesday. Right now I'm still keeping a small chance(20%) for rain late Monday and a rain possibly switching to snow on Tuesday (40%) with a chilly Wednesday in store behind it.
Of course, being five days away things will most likely flip flop a few more times...so for now, that's where the forecast stands. Between now and then, get out and enjoy the lovely weather for today...as we might not see a fully sunny and warm day for a while!
Also, Joe mentioned this yesterday, but in case you missed it...we'll have our winter weather forecast posted on our blog during the afternoon hours tomorrow!

Good Afternoon Everyone!
Yesterday I wrote a blog and said in it we'd see mostly rain for the rest of the storms duration(I was wrong)...well if you live in Kansas City you probably woke up to a little bit of snow! It was from the same storm that brough 7+ inches of snow to parts of Kansas yesterday and dropped 1.2" of snow at KCI airport this morning. Totals around the metro were around an inch or less in most spots...and most of it melted by lunchtime from the rain that moved back in. For the rest of the afternoon we'll see rain continuing to rotate around the low into the downtown area. This rain has caused some flooding concerns and lead to the flood warnings to be issued for several counties on the Missouri side of the state line.
Rain should linger through the rest of the evening and into tomorrow as well for the metro, but should decrease more Wednesday into a drizzle. Temperatures should remain fairly close to what they were today, with a very small change from the low to the high. I'm forecasting mid 30s tonight and low 40s tomorrow for highs. The best chance for anymore snow from this system will be tied closer to the center of circulation where dynamics are better for producing snow (since really no one has seen air that cold when it did snow) which should be south and east of Kansas City.
Tomorrow evening we'll finally see this storm moving away to the northeast which means by Thursday we could see a little bit of sunshine (stressing on the word little). Temperatures will be warmer Thursday as well and Friday and Saturday will follow suit.
Our weekend looks dry right now with temperatures in the 50s for Saturday and Sunday. Our next storm should move in early next week, with temperatures cooling back down to the 40s and possibly 30s by next Tuesday afternoon. If the rain lingers into Tuesday we may see a switch over to snow as colder air filters in behind the next system. Even though we haven't officially started winter...the forecast (at least for a few of the days) certainly feels like it!
Hang in there everyone...and if it makes you feel any better, do what I did this morning...I got to make a nice snowball to chuck at my fiancee when he was least expecting it!

It is so easy to fall into the trap of "they sounded nice on the phone", or "they were the cheapest", or even "they did my neighbor's driveway and it looks good". But until you start looking into a business or a contractor, you should not take anything at face value. With the advent of the internet and the plethora of resources available at the touch of a button, it has never been easier to see if the company you are about to do business with or the contractor you are about to hire is worth your time or money.
The first thing you should do is ask around. If you know someone who has used this company/contractor, ask how satisfied they were with the work or how well the process went. Your neighbor's driveway might look like a job well done, but you don't know what it took to get to that point unless you ask.
The next step should be to check out the company or contractor online. Go to the Better Business Bureau's website (www.bbb.org). The BBB should be a good early indicator of how many complaints the company has against them and how satisfied their previous clients are. After you check them out with the BBB, check with the Attorney General of the state the business is operated out of. (For Kansas go to: www.ksag.org. For Missouri go to: ago.mo.gov). You should be able to search for complaints made against the company or contractor, as well as file your own complaint if you have one. You should also google the name of the company followed by the word "scam" and see if any complaints pop up.
There are a couple of other websites you can use to check out a business. You can try www.ripoffreport.com, or in Missouri, www.casenet.com. Casenet will show you how many times a company has been sued, as well as what they have been sued for.
You should check with the Secretary of State's office in the state the company is operated in to see if the business is in good standing with the state and to check if it is still properly "incorporated" or "registered".
If you are planning to hire a contractor, you should insist on checking their licensing and bonding, and you should make sure they are properly insured. You can check online at www.contractors-license.org to check that the licenses of the contractor are up-to-date. You should also ask them to sign a disclosure stating that failure to pay a subcontractor or supplier will hold them liable, so you don't end up footing a bill you don't owe and so you aren't facing a lawsuit later on down the road.
For more tips on how to avoid being scammed, go to: www.lawmo.org/law_hou.htm.
If you are the victim of a scam or unfair or deceptive sales practices, you should:
-Consult a lawyer
-Contact your Attorney General
-Contact the BBB and National Fraud Information Center

Good Afternoon everyone!
Snow has been falling since early this morning in parts of the viewing area...with the heaviest amounts across northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas. We've also had reports of sleet and snow mixing in with the rain around the Kansas City metro and also south around Shawnee and Olathe. Snow totals so far have been pretty impressive along the Kansas and Nebraska border, with a few spots already picking up seven inches of snow!
Here are some totals through 1pm:
Morrill, Baileyville, Beattie, Marysville, KS; : 7"
Fairview, KS: 6"
Highland, Eureka, KS: 5"
Fairfax, MO: 3"
Concordia, KS; Maryville, MO: 2"
St. Joseph, MO: 1.5"
Most of these totals, as you can see, are heavier on the Kansas side where the air was cooler under the rotating storm. The Missouri side saw mostly a cold rain, with some sleet mixed in. KCI airport had some light snow falling around 9-10 a.m. but nothing was sticking to the ground when I called them at that time. This storm should linger around the plains for the next 24-36 hours before it finally moves out to the north. I don't expect snow back in the forecast with this storm tomorrow, just a chilly rain/mist/drizzle as it meanders around the plains.
This will be our first official snow for the season, exactly one day later than last year's first snow date! This brings us back to reality as far as our weather is concerned. After a very mild first half of November we're reminded that we are approaching winter, and it's that time of the year to prepare for snow, cold temperatures, ice, etc. November 18th is Winter Weather Awareness Day. We'll detail more about winter safety on Wednesday.
In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your day, chilly rain/sleet/snow and all!

I was doing research into Nike Hercules missile sites and found that there were three here in Kansas City - Fort Leavenworth, Gardner Kansas, and Pleasant Hill Missouri. All Nike missile sites were "deactivated" in the 1960's but the History Channel found that there were a significant number of sites throughout the country that are still intact and still equipped with live missiles in states of suspended animation. No information has been made public about the status of the Nike missile sites here in Kansas City - "FDS" is listed as the status for the launch facility in Gardner Kansas, "Department of Defense" is listed as the status of the launch facility in Pleasant Hill Missouri and "unknown" is listed as the status of the launch facility at Fort Leavenworth.
Nike-Hercules missiles were designed to shoot down Soviet bombers. Equipped with 40-kiloton nuclear warheads, the Nike missiles were fired straight up to an altitude of 20 miles, then they freefell into the middle of the bomber formation and detonated, destroying the bombers and giving anyone or anything directly below the blast a lethal dose of radiation. For comparison, the Hiroshima bomb was 14 kilotons.
What makes this issue even more urgent is Kansas City's proximity to the Humbolt fault line which runs from southwest to northeast just outside Lawrence Kansas. The Humbolt line triggered a Magnitude 5.6 quake epicentered here in KC in 2001 or 2003 and that quake caused a mine collapse. If the Nike sites here are still equipped with live missiles and the Humbolt fault produces a magnitude 7 or 8 tremor, Kansas City will be gone.

Still a very complex situation...on the one hand you can see how it can snow...on the other hand...th eTopeka sounding tonight revealed at least a 4000' layer of "warm" air above the surface...which will get eroded from west to east tomorrow...however closer to the State Line this erosion may not happen till later tomorrow AM...which coincedently is when most of the precip will be north of KC leaving the metro with the remnants of very light precip...perhaps some flakes mixed in (?) still up in the air...then the back side of the storm starts to weaken...which would be moving over us later tomorrow night and early TUE AM...
Radar out west looks pretty puny right now...NWS in Hastings is reporting snow sticking to grassy surfaces only with road temps still well into the 40s...but that's expected...closer to home the showers certainly look healthier in NE KS moving northwards and NWards around the eveloping storm...
Basically I'm going 2-4" for the NW tip of MO extending SWards towards Manahattan...there could be an isolated heavier amount...surrounding that area is an under 2" band...to north of St Joe...again this is NOT set in stone...DH/KR will have their hands full tomorrow AM figuring this stuff out...
Something else that has caught my attention is the drier low level air working into NW MO...this air, as the precip falls into it, will cool down even more...also of note is the models overforecasting the QPF of this storm at least thus far...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Good afternoon and thanks for spending a few minutes on the blog with me this crummy, yucky...Sunday afternoon...as things thus far are going according to plan with the rainfall and the falling temperatures...our midnight high was 49 degrees but we've been dropping all morning...and now are @ 40 as of 2PM...with rain all over the place that should last for the rest of the afternoon...so far in the metro rainfall totals are near about .33" and areas from Sedalia to Clinton to Nevada and Chanute have had 1-2.5" of rainfall with thunder earlier this AM...just a miserable November afternoon overall...
The winds are drying to bring in drier air from the NE dewpoints have dropped to the 20s in IA this afternoon and as the rainfall has encountered the drier air being brought in some of the rain evaporates and cools the temperatures down...that's why we've seen the falling temperatures today...and this was expected yesterday and was in the forecast...and this process may erode the temperatures a bit more over the next 24 hours...
Our storm is now really taking shape...and has produced a nice little 6-12" snowstorm in the Rockies...it's now snowing moderately @ Goodland, KS...where winter storm warnings are in effect for parts of western KS from Garden City northwards into SW NE...you can see a moderate to heavy snow band setting up out there now...so the aerial extent of the snow may not be large...some areas have already had 3-6" of snow...
So where is our storm now...spinning away in N NM...the water vapor loop shows it well...and as you look at it a dry slot of sorts is going to move into the region this evening cutting off the significant rainfall and leaving us with a lot of drizzle/mist that we'll deal with for the rest of the night with temps near 40 degrees or so...as our storm evolves and intensifies nearby and just too our south....the moisture on the backside of it (commahead) will move on top of us tomorrow allowing the rain to once again increase somewhat in intensity especially for areas N/NW of KC...last night I was focusing the heaviest of the precip for the storm overall to the SE and N of the metro and so far that call looks good...
The storm tomorrow is forecasted to pass to the South of the metro, the core near the Nevada area then by TUE AM near West Plains and by TUE PM up south of St Louis and by WED AM near St Louis (as it slows even more) before being kecked out to near Chicago by THU AM and as the storm pulls away and we start to at least see some sunshine on THU...we should moderate and by FRI we should warm up well into the 50s assuming we get enough sunshine...
Now onto the snow scenario...the latest data is showing the chance of snow increasing for areas up to the N/NW of the metro as a matter of fact the NAM is actually producing some accumulating wet snow for the NW tip of MO and NE KS...take a look at the snowfall forecast from the NAM
Now the GFS...
Getting more into the NAM at least...looking at various other products...and it appears that the bulk of this snow is supposed to come down tomorrow AM into early tomorrow afternoon...as it's grabbing onto a mesoscale band of precip and wrapping in into air cold enough to support snow...I always get nervous when a model tries to pinpoint some small mesoscale feature so I won't bite hard at it at this point...it should be noted the the GFS has a similar look just closer to the KS/NE border area north of Topeka and Manhattan...and it's certainly possible tomorrow night that there may be some flakes from Emporia to west of KC (near Topeka) upwards towards far N MO...but please don't put that in stone yet...lets see how the atmosphere responds as our storm gets closer...Winter Weather Advisories are now up for far NW MO...from St Joe NWards to the NE/IA border...and at this point this makes sense to me...
Here's something interesting...we haven't had one night yet in NOV with temperatures near freezing...the lowest being 36...in October we had one day @ 32 and one day @ 31...still no 32 degree lows in the forecast for awhile...and through yesterday we are close to 10 degrees above average for the month...
We'll update the blog later this evening as new information rolls in and I get a look at the 6PM soundings...

Another week goes by and another collection of special people who contribute in a negative manner to the political discourse that fills our lives. With special attention this week to those that make their negative comments in the name of God.
So let’s start with the Rev. Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church who spent the early part of this week protesting in Washington D.C. They held anti-Obama signs, anti-gay signs & anti-abortion signs as they marched outside….SIDWELL FRIENDS SCHOOL, which is attended by the Obama children. The church website posted the following explanation for the site of the protest: “Quakers?! Are you frigging kidding me? You pretend to be all non-violent, and you allow the most bloody, deceitful, evil, murderous bastard and his shemale sidekick to place their satanic spawn within your four walls?" Note to the Westboro Baptists, the verse in the Bible where Jesus says, “Suffer the little children” didn’t mean to make the children suffer by calling them “satanic spawn”! You people are real LOSERS!
Ex-Congressman William Jefferson (D-LA), who brought whole new meaning to the phrase “cold hard cash” was sentenced to 13 years in prison for corruption and is now a 13 year loser (with time off for good behavior)!
Senator David Vitter (R-LA) wins a nod as a loser due to comments by one of the challengers for his Senate seat. “I'm not one to judge someone's sexual activity, but what annoys me is that he's so hard-core "family values," and he puts his wife and kids out there, saying he's a Christian family man. Then he's caught up in a prostitution scandal. He's a hypocrite”, said Stormy Daniels. The porn-star-turned-candidate then went on to point out that if elected, she would be able to avoid sex scandals because all of her sex tapes can be found on the shelves at video stores. You know you’re a loser when a porn star can claim the moral high ground.
The Catholic Church also made my personal list of LOSERS this week. Not because of the church’s influence in getting the Stupak amendment passed; I might not like the legislation but if you support the Right to Life movement, it’s your right to petition your representatives in Congress. However, if you are going to take a stand for the rights of the unborn, you should also be willing to support children AFTER birth as well. For instance, take the case of Nathan Halbach, a 22 year old man who is dying of brain cancer. His mother also has terminal cancer. Nathan’s estranged father is Father Henry Willenborg, a Franciscan priest. When the Church was asked to help pay for medical treatment…they refused! Father Henry was never a “Dad” to Nathan, the least he could do for his son is to petition the Order to help make his son’s death a little easier. But he didn’t. And the Church also weighed in on gay marriage this week in D.C. by promising to stop all charitable work in the city if the D.C. city council passed a gay marriage ordinance. I don’t remember Jesus making everyone take a morality “litmus test” before feeding them bread & fish. I’m sure Jesus would be proud! So for these two actions…I’ve got the Catholic Church on the LOSERS LIST!
Congressman Barney Franks (D-MA) gets a nomination for his comments to a local Fox News reporter. When asked if he was present at the home of his lover in 1997 during a pot bust, he said he was but that he didn’t know the plants were there and since, "I not a great outdoorsman…I would not recognize most plants." Now that may be true, but to put it in those terms leaves you open to a lot of silly news commentary. Like Wolf Blitzer and Lou Dobbs who apparently can identify pot plants by smell and sight! (Who also get a nomination for LOSER because people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.) Congressman, there were a lot of better ways to have phrased your comments than you did! But at least you improved on Bill Clinton’s “I didn’t inhale” line.
Tweeter-extraordinaire, Sarah Palin also gets mention this week. Not for all of the factual inaccuracies found by the AP in your new book, not for your Oprah interview, not even for letting your book tour get upstaged by your daughter’s baby daddy’s “hockey stick”. You get named LOSER because of your crazy assertion that moving the words “In God We Trust” from the front of the coin to the rim of the coin is part of the great Obama conspiracy! The truth is that this change was made by the Bush administration and you are a LOSER when your conspiracy theories are so far out there that even FOX NEWS fact checks you.
Democratic strategist Ted Devine proved to be a loser this week when he responded to threats from various Democratic groups to halt donations to the party in favor of supporting specific candidates. Many people do not want their money to help support Democrats who vote against Health Care Reform. Mr. Devine stated that, “I think it is a very powerful point of influence when you go to people who rely on donations to fund very expensive campaigns and tell them the people they count on won't be there to support them because of their position on a single issue”. Mr. Devine, only a LOSER forgets whose money it is to begin with that supports those “expensive campaigns”. We'll spend it where we want. And if quality reform DOESN’T pass….we’ll need that money for our increasing premiums!
And finally, Tea Party organizers in Danville, VA get listed as LOSERS for their announced plans to burn in effigy, Speaker of the House Pelosi and local representative, Congressman Tom Perriello (D-VA) for their support of health care reform. You can protest all you want…but you cross the line when you start burning people (even in effigy). I know you feel you personally don’t have representation in Congress but the fact remains that more people from your district voted for Perriello than any other candidate. So he IS your representation even if you don’t agree with him. The neat thing about Democracy is that the majority rules! I remember being called unpatriotic and treasonous for having a bumper sticker that read, “Somewhere in Texas there’s a village without it’s idiot”….that bumper sticker seems to pale in comparison to you LOSERS playing with fire.
The news out of Bates city missouri is sickening, the whole family father and all the sons nothing but a bunch of sick twisted bastards who should be hung for the acts they committed on these kids.I am so sick of these child rapist and the sick and demented actions that they do for their own sexual sickness. We should change the law to protect children from these sick bastards it should be nothing short of the death penalty for them all.I do not want to know what makes these sicko`s tick! I want them to suffer worse than what their victims did. They have shamed their church and the harm they have done will never be erased.I say off with their heads and justice will be served! This is such a sad and sick crime and the justice needs to be severe enough to make point"DO NOT MISTREAT CHILDREN" I am sure they will plead insanity or some other bogus plea to save their butts,I hope and pray the judge at least gives them life with no parole which is more than they deserve.I hope all the big bubbas in prison do to them worse things that they did to these kids. They should get the death sentence, they do not deserve to live in our world. There is no forgiveness in what they did nor should there, the world needs to rid of these and any other sick twisted animals that ruin the lives of the innocent kids. And they call themselves religous,I would not want to be part of that twisted churchs beliefs,God only knows how many others will come forward.
what is wrong with our government, i realize that they are busy but when a citzen is willing to do what they can to help but can't(they are stuck) in one spot meaning they can't pertisipate in anything can't even get out of the apartment cause the landlord won't keep his promises! I am not trying to make ity hard for noone but at least i want to be heard! I have emailed the governor of missouri and e mailed everyone i could think of what else can i do?I heard that the city of kcmo was trying to clean up the neighborhoods but come and see how the neighborhoods are .The landlords don't care cause the people don't care , everybody wants MONEY! Of course it takes money to run a neiughborhood we are never gionna have a decent neighborhood if no one cares enough to at least look!people don't care about other peole. They don't even try.i can't use my right had to write letters or i would! I AM RIGHT HANDED but do to a stroke i don't have the use of writtinhg with my right hand.

It’s been called the best sports bar in the Southland. It’s also been noted for its friendly wait staff. I’m talking about Lew’s Grill & Bar in Waldo. It’s located in a nondescript strip mall at 75th and Wornall. I’ve passed this place a million times and never felt a strong desire to go there but after hearing from several people about how great it is, I felt like I had to give it a try.

Lew’s looks like your typical sports bar. It’s filled with several TV’s, sports memorabilia, spacious booths, and a game room with darts and Guitar Hero. We were told to pick any seat in the place. We picked a large semi-circle booth with a perfect view of ESPN on the TV above us. Our server’s name was Seanna. She was very friendly. She told us about several specials, including $5.50 martinis. So, naturally I had to get one. I ordered Green Apple Tini. I’m quite the martini fan and have had my fair share in different Kansas City restaurants. But, I have to say that this green concoction was one of the best martinis I have ever had. It had just the right mix of sweet and sour.
For appetizers, we had Espinaca Dip. It’s a “Lew’s Favorite” and for good reason. The dip is a mixture of melted pepper jack cheese, spinach, green onions and tomatoes. It was served with tortilla chips. The cheesy dip is to die for. My only complaint would be the portion size. The appetizer only serves about two people, three at most. If you have a group larger than three, I would recommend getting two appetizers.
The menu is very large and there is plenty to choose from. You can choose from burgers, sandwiches, meat loaf, fish and chips, and more. I decided to go for a Blackened Chicken Wrap. This is how bar food should taste. It has chicken, mixed salad greens, cream cheese, tomato and onions. All that food is rolled in a large tomato tortilla. It was delicious and incredibly filling. Chipotle ranch was served on the side. It was also very tasty. The wrap came with a choice of slaw, chips, or French fries. I chose the fries. They were pretty good, but not quite up to the quality of the wrap or dip. I couldn’t quite finish the fries after eating all the other great food.
All in all, I was very impressed with Lew’s. The prices were reasonable. Most dishes were about $8-$10. The appetizers ranged from $5-9. The service was top-notch. The food was delicious. The drinks were unbelievably good. Lew’s is the perfect place to hang out with friends, eat good food, and watch a Chiefs game. I recommend you head to Waldo and check it out.
Man holding shotgun is shot by police
Kansas City Star
A man is in critical condition tonight after a Kansas City police officer shot him in the chest.
The 20-year-old man walked onto his porch at East 7th Street and Spruce Avenue holding a shotgun pointed upward. As he began to lower the shotgun, one of two officers in front of his house fired one shot, according to Officer Darin Snapp of the Kansas City Police Department.
Police had gone to the man’s house around 7 p.m. because they suspected he was involved in a shootout a couple of hours before in the 5200 block of Scarritt Avenue.
The man also was wanted on two felony drug warrants and one concealed weapon warrant, Snapp said.
My view on this is the cops likely told the suspect to put the shotgun down but as he was lowering it, one of the cops panicked and shot the suspect, which begs the question, "why tell a suspect to put the gun down when you won't even give him that chance to begin with?" and secondly, since the suspect DID NOT fire a shot at police after the police arrived at his house, the cop who fired the shot cannot claim self defense since he fired the first shot.
Now, for all those cops on here who want to justify the cop's actions in this report by saying "he should have left the gun in the house"...Just so you know, if I heard a lot of commotion outside my house in what is normally a quiet neighborhood, damn straight I'd have a gun in my hand when I go to check on it. If I heard people yelling and stuff outside my house, I'd fear for my own life and would have a gun in my hand to protect myself. Before you cops say "But if the suspect has a gun, we fear for our lives", let me just say that I can easily justify my own actions the same way. If you cops can get away with something, so can I. By the way, if you're so damn scared of being shot at, why did you become cops in the first place?
When I say I can get away with the same stuff you cops do, I mean that you cops are bound by the same laws and morals as the rest of us, that you cops are supposed to be setting the example for the rest of us, and that it is mighty close to hypocrisy if you feel you can break every law you're paid to enforce but punish everyone else for breaking those same laws.
I told this to a Merriam cop when he ticketed me for turning into the outside lane: "If you're going to punish one person for doing something, punish everyone who does it. That includes your own people."

...they FRY!
Yes, once again I entered "enemy" territory. My annual wager with Sportsradio 810's Kevin Kietzman, at the Kansas City Catbacker's annual Chicken Hawk Fry. Many of my Jayhawk friends, even a few Mizzou friends, question my sanity each year when I show up at the K-State event to face the taunts and jeers.
Honestly, it's a great time, the taunts and jeers all in good spirits, the emotional scarring pretty minor! Having grown up in K-State country, central Kansas, I was well-prepared when I first took on the wager from my former co-anchor Lisa Rinehart some 12 years ago or so. My how time flies!
Over the years I've dished it right back at the event, though Kietz is a tough act to follow. He does sports talk for a living...me? I'm a bit of a rookie!
But...finally...after many long years of paying off the bet, I got my revenge when KU started turning the tide and winning some Sunflower Showdowns. Indeed, I'm on a bit of a streak of my own now...three in a row!
So, I'm hoping Kietz has to serve up lunch at Fox 4 as the KU streak continues, to payback to this season's wager. If not, I'll provide the service to his collegues at 810.
Thanks to the Catbackers for welcoming me again this year to the Lucky Brewgrille in Mission, and thanks for my honorary lifetime membership in the KC chapter I was awarded a couple of years ago. I show my ID card proudly, unless, of course, it's KU-K-State gameday!

Good Afternoon Everyone!
We've officially turned the corner for the week and for the forecast. Tonight we'll see the high pressure sliding on top of us which will lead to clear skies, light winds and chilly overnight lows. Some locations could drop below freezing, for Kansas City I went with a 34 degree low temperature for tonight. This is the last of the chilly air for a while...as we'll finally see warmer weather back in the forecast starting Friday. Expect highs around 70 Friday, around 76 Saturday and back to the lower 70s on Sunday. Dry weather will also remain in the forecast through Sunday...in other words, we are in store for a great weekend! Highs this weekend will be more typical of late September and early October, not early November, so enjoy it!
Next week is when we'll see our rain chances returning. Monday night into Tuesday morning we'll see the next storm moving through the plains. The big question right now is if there will be enough moisture in place to get a decent chance for rain. Right now I'm only holding out for a light rain event at best for Monday night into early Tuesday. My forecast today had a 30% chance in for that time frame. Temperatures will also drop back to the upper 50s and lower 60s (more typical of this time of the year). This cool down will be short lived though, as it appears we'll warm back up towards the middle of next week!
Looking even farther ahead, it looks like the weekend of Nov. 14th we'll see a return to a slightly colder pattern. Of course that is so far off, I wouldn't worry about it too much...but the mention of colder weather brings me to my next topic for today's blog: Our Winter Weather Forecast.
Our annual Winter Roundtable where the four of us sit down and discuss our predictions for the upcoming winter will be November 20th during the evening news. We'll talk about what we think will be our lowest temperature for the winter season, along with our snowfall predictions. Keep in mind average snowfall is right around 20 inches for KCI. Last year we ended up with 14.6" and our coldest low -6. This year we are going to have to take into account that El Nino is back. Typically El Nino winters tend to be slightly above average temperature wise and precipitation tends to be slightly below or around average. Definitely something to think about over the next couple of weeks as we all try to put together our winter forecast!
The National Weather Service also put together there 2009 Winter Outlook, and also talked more in depth about El Nino and it's impact on our winter. Click here to listen: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/eax/briefing/
Switching from winter weather to Tropics (yes, it is still Hurricane Season until November 30th!) we have another Tropical Depression (#11) that is currently off the coast of Nicaragua. A recon plane is en route to the depression as I type this to see if it has strengthened into Tropical Storm Ida. You can see the most current info here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml?
Have a great day everyone, and enjoy the blue skies!
