The Ghost of Pontius Pilate

William Sparkman, 51, was a substitute teacher for Laurel County Kentucky.   He was an Eagle Scout.    He was well liked in the community.   He moved to Kentucky when he was transferred by his employer, The Boy Scouts of America.  He became interested in teaching and several years ago decided to switch careers.  He went back to school to become an elementary school teacher.   He loved to teach and was scheduled to graduate college with his teaching certificate in 2007.  Unfortunately he was diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma before he completed his degree.   He balanced chemotherapy with school work and managed to graduate on time.   He was even the key note speaker at his own graduation, where he told his fellow graduates, “I’d been knocked down, but I refused to be knocked out.  Those brick walls will appear from time to time in your career. Do not let them stop you. There are no failures, just teaching moments.”

Bill Sparkman was also a part-time Census worker.

On September 12th, the decomposing body of Bill Sparkman was found hanging from a tree next to a cemetery near the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural, south east Kentucky.   The word “FED” was written on his chest.  His truck and the laptop he used for his census work was found nearby.

We don’t know much more than that at this time.   We don’t know how he died.   We don’t know for sure that it was murder, although the local Census Director says she was told that it was an “apparent homicide”.

We do know that a week and a half after the body was found, federal agents have been unable to rule out his connection with the Census as a contributing factor.  We know that Census interviews for that area have been put on hold indefinitely.

This summer, I attended the Kansas City Ethnic Festival.   It was filled with booths representing the food & crafts of most of the different immigrant groups found in Kansas City.  It also had a booth set up for the Census Bureau.    I jokingly asked the woman manning the booth if she was one of “those ACORN people” expecting her to laugh in exasperation at the number of times she had been asked that question.   Instead she looked at me with a mix of fear and anger.  “Not today I haven’t”, she told me.   I immediately apologized for upsetting her and as she calmed down she explained that it was becoming very scary to work for the Census.   There were lots of threats made to Census workers this summer and lots of hatred directed at them.  She was even reconsidering her job.   I felt bad for her but thought she was probably over-reacting.   Now I’m not so sure.

We don’t know that Mr. Sparkman was killed because he was a census taker.   We do know that the following has been said about the census this year.  Media Matters.com lists the following examples of Conservative Media discussing the Census.

----------------------------------------------------

On July 23, 2009, Glenn Beck tells radio listeners that people going “door to door collecting information” would be helping to create a “modern day slave state”.

------------------------------------------------------

During a June 25 interview with Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) on his Fox News show, Glenn Beck stated that "there's a lot of people that are concerned" with the census "because they don't want to fill it out. They're not comfortable with ACORN members coming to find out all this information. They don't want to give the government all this kind of information."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

On the June 22 broadcast of Clear Channel's The War Room with Quinn & Rose, Co-host Rose Tennent stated that Bachmann reportedly said that she does not intend to complete the census and stated: "ACORN being recruited by Obama for a mission -- that is so frightening." After listing several questions included in the census, she added that "it's just so intrusive. And you're right. I mean, there's the risk of identity theft and all kinds of things. I'm just -- it scares me to think that these thugs are getting this information from us."

---------------------------------------------------------------

On June 18, using the headline "What Kind of Info Is ACORN Gathering for Census?" The Fox Nation linked to a June 18 Washington Times article reporting that Bachmann stated "she will not fill out anything more than the number of people in her household" for the 2010 census because "the questions have become 'very intricate, very personal' " and because "she feared ACORN."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

On the May 20 edition of his radio show, Neal Boortz told a caller, "I received a census form the other day asking me a whole bunch of questions about my small business. I threw it in the trash. I'm not going to answer it. None of their damn business." He later added that "the federal government and the state government, they have a legitimate reason for knowing how many people live where. They have no legitimate reason for knowing anything else. The rest of the information is -- most of the rest of the information is designed to help the government steal from you in order to pass off your property to the moochers. They're looters."

------------------------------------------------------

On May 20, Neal Boortz said, “My advice to you -- and to all of my listeners -- is always: Obey the law. And the law says you have to answer this stuff. OK? But, if I have received the American Community Survey and I ref-- I personally refuse to respond to it, and once every 10 years I will respond to the census, but the only information I will give them is the number of adults who live in my household and that -- or the number of people -- doesn't, you know -- the number of people who live in my household, and that is it.

And they've knocked on my door. And they've come to my door with badges. And they've come to my door and told me I could be fined. They've come to my door and they've told me that I am breaking the law. And I look at them and I say, "Two adults live here. That is all the information I will voluntarily give you. Waterboard me if you want to learn any more." But that's it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

We don’t KNOW that comments like these and others made by the Right were the cause of Mr. Sparkman’s death.  We don’t know that a Glenn Beck fan scrawled the word “FED” across the chest of Mr. Sparkman’s body.   But anyone with any kind of a sense of morality would at least wonder.

We can however predict the response of Mr. Beck and his fellow harbingers of Socialistic Doom.   They will all sigh and explain how they are merely doing their jobs as “journalists”.   They are innocent!  And much like Pontius Pilate, they will wash their hands of the whole affair and continue on in their eternal search for ratings gold.   Spreading hatred and fear through lies and exaggeration.   They will be oblivious to the consequences of their speech and they will ignore the blood on their hands.

I hope that late at night in the privacy of their home, they hear the ghost of Pontius Pilate whispering, “Remember Bill Sparkman.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"He was such an innocent person, I hate to say that he was naive, but he saw the world as all good, and there's a lot of bad in the world."

Gilbert Acciardo, retired Kentucky State Trooper & co-worker of  Bill Sparkman

  • Start a post and we can debate why the opening up of the insurance market wont control cost THROUGH A SIGNIFIGANT RISE IN COMPETITION.You can explain why we need to make the leap to a public option BEFORE we see how much cost are cut with OVERSIGHT ON WASTE AND FRAUD(which DOESNT require a NEW LAW) and the increased competition.

By your own standard the left is inciteing  violence when they call tea parties "angry mobs",they say town halls are "frightening"and use fear tactics telling people the right will take away your medicare, welfare etc...........You REALLY cant see your hypocricy?Give it up!

ACORN is NOT involved in the census.    What they have done is advertise among their members to apply for census jobs.  Period.  Nothing more.  And they are (were) one of 30,000 other organizations doing the same thing.

As to advocating violence, as I said before, if I really believed that people going door to door to create a "slave state", have been told by a member of Congress that they are "frightning" "thugs".   If I believed that they are "looters" to be "feared".   If I REALLY BELIEVED all of that....I'ld be able to rationalize defending myself in any number of ways.

The difference between the far right conservative nut cases and the far left nutcases is that the left is not trying to egg these people on for political gain.   You don't see Congressman Franks telling people that the leaders of the G-20 are trying to destroy America.

ANd I have agreed with you that tort reform is necessary and I don't mind allowing people to cross state lines to buy insurance....I just also believe that a Public Option is essential to controling costs.   That's where we disagree.   (Although latest polls seem to indicate that a lot of Americans agree with me about the issue of a public option.  ANd the CBO has admitted that a public option will cut costs a great deal more than ANY other plan out there....if you want to call what the Republicans want a "plan".

  • Nemo how can you call the peoples concerns about ACORN "baseless"?.............Are you serious?

You may not think so but when the government allows a disorganized community activist group, with NO SIGN of internal accountability to have a intricate role in something as important as the census it is FRIGHTENING!

None of the quotes you provided advocated ANY sort of violence! They simply stated FACTS,facts that to the REASONABLE person show there is real reason for concern. The commentators DID advocate civil disobedience when they say they will not provide anymore information than the census is empowered by the Constitution to obtain.

On another post you call the "anarchist" that used violence at the G20 summit part of the "FAR FAR FRINGE LEFT".Its OBVIOUS that this situation IF political has been committed by someone on the FAR FAR RIGHT,...........Why the double standard?........Your a hypocrite?

You say Olberman and Maddow dont incite violence and I agree with you,but they are no less guilty BY YOUR STANDARD YOU HOLD THE RIGHT TO ,when they say the town halls "frightening","angry mobs"ETC..........How many times did Olbermantry to "border on incitement"(your OWN standard)when he called Bush a "fascist","liar" and worse?

As to the "old nemo",I still miss him.He would have never posted this WEAK attempt at,yes, MARGINALIZATION nor would he have stayed with this flawed thought process and offered equally weak/hypocritical justifications for it.

I think its time you practice what you preach and adopt the free market competition/tort reform proposals offered and I ALREADY have adpoted the insurance company regulations Obama proposed ,lets put them together in the spirit of bi-partisanship and TRUE compromise so we can come together on meaningful healthcare reform.Instead of posting this divisive hypocritical drivel,we can debate the ISSUES and reach true compromise and move the country forward.......unless your intent is to INCITE more partisanship and God forbid.................VIOLENCE!

The problem as I see it is that many on the Right are doing anything BUT OBJECTIVELY placing blame where it belongs.  Read the quotes above.   That is not objective reporting...it's just shy of incitement.

As to "missing the old nemo", there's been no change on my part.   I just refuse to dignify the baseless accusations of the Right as legitmate arguments.   If you want to talk healthcare without referencing non-existent "death panels", great.  If you want to discuss policy fine, but don't make birth certificates part of the policy argument.   Because the simple fact is that many (not all) on the Right have reached a point where the arguments don't deserve a serious discussion.   Now, when I point that out, I'm told I'm "marginalizing" your views, but if the views are so far out that they are silly....they deserve to be called silly.

It would be like me trying to justify the actions of the protestors for the G-20 summit.   There is your FAR FAR Left wing fringe group.  And let me just say that rioting in the streets is wrong!  Hacking computers to disrupt society is criminal and should be prosecuted.   Alleging that the Government is run by an unknown entity designed to support world corporations is lunacy.   And many on the left call these people out for their behavior...why can't the Right police their own people as well?

  • Nemo,You were always critical when people would refer to Islam as the cause of terrorist violence saying that MOST of Islam were peaceful. There are violent elements on the FRINGE of the RIGHT and LEFT.Why dont you just stop your hypocritical conjecture about the people that simply point out FACTS about ACORN and radicals in our government and OBJECTIVELY place blame where it belongs. It belongs with the people/person that committed this travesty against Mr Sparks.Otherwise you open up the field of possibility that ACORN,Obama and his radicals are equally as guilty based on the facts we know about illegalities, massive government intervention and a "fundemental transformation" of America that many Americans see as an overreaching power grab.

I understand that it is a time honored tactic of the left to prey on the sympathies of the populace if effort to shape the terms of debate so that certain elements ,phrases and words are marginalized .NEWSFLASH! Its not working so well for you guys anymore! America is waking up and after TARP1,TARP 2,Stimulus,The possibility of CAP & TRADE and now healthcare America is leary of government.A FEW fringe elements have POSSIBLY taken that fear to extremes and committed horrible acts but that is not the norm.So if your going to use this "sympathy/ conservatives are guilty for the actions of one man"tactic, you should be equally prepared to face the facts that our government is EVERY BIT as guilty as commentators and TV personalities.......if thats the debate YOU want to have....????

I miss the old nemo,That would somewhat objectively debate the issues based on their merits. The guy that would concede a point when FACTS bore themselves out.The man that actually DID seek real COMPROMISE.Was I just giving you too much credit?Did that guy ever exist?Or had the rubber just never met the road? Who knows? but,In my eyes, you have gone from a TOP SHELF blogger and plumeted down into the depths of weak arguments, smarmy tactics and a total loss of objectivity.....I cant believe Im saying this but its true.......Now you are just another KINGBORG! Disappointing!
