Do you really think this is worth bragging about?

I was quite suprised to find this headline on my yahoo homepage this morning:

New jobless claims drop to 512K, lowest since Jan

So, only 1/2 million Americans lost their job this month. It is a sad day, when this is something to brag about. After these latest jobloss claims we will be up to 9.9% unemployment rate.

I am not very good at the new math, but when I went to school, after I fed the dinosaurs in the morning... this meant that 1 out of every 10 Americans dont have a job. With no end in sight. We will hit 10% by the end of next month.

As the "Stimulus" programs finish up, it will only be worse. The 3.5% growth in the economy (not the jobs) will all but be eaten up, the money put into them will be gone, and will be nothing but a debt remaining.

I hope that all of you truly review our government and who is sitting in the positions of representatives in the House this year. America has a chance to turn this around, with the right people in place.

These are supposed to be our great thinkers, not our great manipulators.

In addition, many companies are squeezing more production from their existing work forces. Productivity, the amount of output per hour worked, jumped 9.5 percent in the third quarter, the Labor Department said in a separate report. That's the sharpest increase in six years, and it enables companies to produce more without hiring extra workers.

So, in answer to the threat of increasing taxes, government interference in healthcare and the pending cap and trade, is to employ less people and expect a lot more out  of them, or lose their job.

This will only prove to produce inferior products and increase mistakes and thus failures.

I expect better from our leaders than to start producing sweat shops again.

  • I agree - I don't shop at Walmart.    And anyone who does, has no right to complain when they shove the small businesses out of town.  Sadly, however, many are earning such low pay, Walmart is all they can afford.   Almost sounds like a designed joined effort there.

I will purchase from a small business owner before I go to a big box store.   Yes, I pay more, and eventually that small business goes out of business, regardless of my patronization.

There's no way to support small businesses when people are making low wages.   The cost of managing a small hardware store, per se, causes that store owner to charge $10 for a screwdriver.   The person making $10 per hour goes to Walmart to buy one for $3.   Our country is killing us economically.   Perhaps slave labor is what we are all destined to be over time?

  • NF,

“Someone who wishes to start a business that produces truly quality items, will be shoved off the edge by big box stores and franchises. Look what happened to the small businesses when Walmart moved in.”

And look at who is flocking to Wal-Mart. We have no one to blame but ourselves. There is greed in all sectors. Corporate executives may want more profit, but how is that different than the American consumer who wants more savings and is willing to purchase foreign goods made by slave labor to pad their own pockets. We allow American companies to hire illegal immigrants so YOU can have cheaper produce and other products because YOU don’t want to have to pay the price it would cost to pay an American worker a decent salary to do the job. What real difference does it make if it’s American jobs going over seas or just our money? Try to find something made in the USA. Perhaps if we Americans had remained loyal to our own products, businesses and laborers, this wouldn‘t be an issue. It isn’t Wal-Mart that runs American businesses out of an area, it‘s American consumers who have no loyalty. And yes, over the years product quality in the US has gone down because of competition with foreign products. American businesses cut corners trying to stay competitive, but you can’t compete with slave labor, especially when your fellow Americans won’t support you.
